Reference lines . The lack of a universally established reference line is a problem that plagues most corpora. A corpus is (usually) not a publication, and it can be very difficult to know what the official name of the corpus is, whose names ought to be included, what year (if any) should be mentioned, and what organizations or institutions are or were involved in the project.

The SciELF corpus consists of research papers that have not undergone professional proofreading services or checking by a native speaker of English. All the papers are written by L2 users of English, and most of these are final drafts of unpublished manuscripts. It is thus a corpus of second-language use (SLU) in written scientific communication. The corpus is available in Kielipankki - the Language Bank of Finland in several versions (see Related resources). Altogether, the ELFA (English as a Lingua Franca in Academic Settings) corpus contains 1 million words of transcribed spoken academic ELF (approximately 131 hours of recorded speech).
